Habitat for Humanity network partners with statewide coalition to increase access to homeownership in Oregon
At Habitat for Humanity of Oregon, we believe that homeownership is essential to creating stable households, building generational wealth, and strengthening communities. That’s why we’re proud to announce our leadership with the Unlocking Homeownership Coalition, a statewide alliance working to make homeownership a reality for more Oregonians. Together, we’re advocating for key policy changes and funding priorities that aim to increase access to affordable homeownership across the state.
Why homeownership matters in Oregon
Oregon ranks 43rd in the nation for homeownership, leaving thousands of families and individuals without the opportunity to build financial security and lasting community roots. With home prices doubling over the past decade, the dream of homeownership has drifted further out of reach for many, and the racial homeownership gap continues to persist. Through the Unlocking Homeownership Coalition, we’re determined to change this trajectory.
A vision for positive change
The coalition’s mission is simple yet powerful: Open the doors to homeownership for thousands of Oregon families, close the racial homeownership gap, and build a more equitable future for our state. By collaborating with the Oregon Legislature and Governor’s Office, we’re pushing for strategic investments and policy reforms in the upcoming 2025 legislative session to make homeownership more achievable for all.
Key legislative priorities
This coalition is focused on both funding requests and policy proposals, including:
- Funding requests: Investments in successful initiatives like the Local Innovation and Fast Track (LIFT) Homeownership Program, Culturally Responsive Organization Down Payment Assistance (CRO DPA), the Homeownership Development Incubator Program (HDIP), and asset-building opportunities made possible through Individual Development Accounts (IDAs).
- Policy concepts: Creating a statewide homeownership goal, conducting a Covenant Homeownership Study, and pursuing Condominium Construction Defect Liability reform.
By addressing these issues, we’re working toward a vision where every Oregonian has the chance to own a home, build generational wealth, and enjoy the stability of a secure, supportive community.
